Research Director

The Center for Responsive Politics / OpenSecret is the nation’s premier research group tracking money in U.S. politics and its effect on elections and public policy. CRP conducts computer-based research for the news media, scholars, activists and the public at large, and shares it through the Center’s award-winning Web site, OpenSecrets.org. Founded in 1983, the nonpartisan, nonprofit Center
aims to create a more educated voter, an involved citizenry and a more responsive government.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Research Director is the supervisor of research operations for the 16-person
organization. The director oversees the research team, participates in the senior management team and
reports to the Executive Director. Specific responsibilities include:

Plan, manage and oversee all research projects, internal research for publication, and custom database research for news organizations, activists, academics and others Plan, manage and oversee categorization of campaign donations, the creation of on-line profiles and research, and proofing and trouble-shooting Supervise seven member research team, including hiring, managing and training
Coordinate weekly activities of research staff Act as liaison internally to CRP IT and Communications staff, to government agencies providing data, and to CRP clients, particularly the news media Manage contact with clients, from initial research design to fee collection Look for future research opportunities—new ways of using CRP data and new areas of research for the Center
Provide presentations at CRP press conferences, newsroom trainings, seminars, and to various press and academic groups, international scholars and officials Perform key leadership role within the organization

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates must be committed to serving the public interest in a non-partisan manner and have a solid understanding of American government, with specialized knowledge of federal elections, politics, and federal disclosure practices. Knowledge and
research experience related to campaign finance and data analysis are essential. Microsoft Access or SQL database research experience ideal, background in programming languages helpful.

Qualified candidates must have demonstrated skills in leadership, personnel management, project management, planning and implementation, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ideal candidate will also have experience with public speaking, working with the media and formal training in research methodology.

UNIX Systems Administrator

Our client is one of the largest retailers in the DC Metro area. They are currently looking to add a Unix Systems Administrator. This person will be responsible for provisioning/system builds, monitoring, system automation, patching/upgrades, troubleshooting, backups and other service request tickets. Maintain Server operating system software such as: Linux, UNIX. Manage user accounts for server access, manage print services and IPs for printers where applicable, manage enterprise virus scanning software and updates as applicable, Interface with higher authority for approval of user accounts and network access, Create and manage user directories on the servers, monitor server logs for errors and failures and perform appropriate troubleshooting and maintenance. Perform server configuration management and documentation, perform backups of servers, and monitor tape backup routine to ensure proper sequence is being followed, verify date on tape backup is valid, and perform tape restorations. Research software upgrades to servers, research new technologies, and document system administration procedures and instructions. This is a home-grown IT department and there will be opportunity to learn other skills and technologies. MUST be a team-player.

Voter File and Data Systems Manager

General Description:
The League of Conservation Voters Education Fund (LCVEF), the independent political voice for the environment, is seeking a Voter File and Data Systems Manager with the strategic, technical and leadership skills to build an organization wide state voter file based cutting edge data use system.
 
Specific (Essential) Responsibilities:
§         Integrating membership data base systems with state voter files.
§         Analyzing data and modeling projects.
§         Managing databases.
§         Creating, managing and distributing reports and answering any data system related questions.
§         Working with other staff members and state league staff to add fields and preferences to the databases.
§         Create effective feedback mechanisms for voterfile and member data base systems.
§         Interacting with Catalist, data system vendor, and LCV/LCVEF and Federation staff and leaders to keep communications open and build the best data products, models, training programs and operational efficiencies.
§         Other responsibilities as assigned.
 
Requirements:
§         Education:   Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or equivalent experience.
§         Work Experience:  Minimum 5 years managerial experience of databases.
§         Skills:                    
o       Expertise in database development and management.
o       Experience with various data base systems (including PIDI), data integration, data aggregation and de-aggregation.
o       Use of statistical models, precinct targeting, consumer appends, lifestyle cluster data, census data, etc. a plus.

o       At least 1 year experience managing a voter file for a party, organization or campaign.

o       Familiarity with Microsoft Access, SQL, FoxPro or similar relational database interfaces.
o       Strong planning and management skills.
o       Strong communications skills.
o       Ability to translate complex data work to user friendly, accessible language.
o       Expertise in modeling (or a desire to develop modeling).
 
§         Capabilities:  Ability to manage complex data systems and relationships.  Ability to plan and manage time sensitive projects with competing needs.  Ability to work effectively with others and keep track of multiple ongoing projects. Ability to develop and oversee implementation of training programs.
 
§         Conditions:  Able to work hours in excess of stated office hours to get the job done.  Little travel.

Vice President, Healthcare Public Affairs Powell Tate, the Washington
office of Weber Shandwick, is seeking a Vice President for its Healthcare Public Affairs practice.  

Responsibilities: The VP will be charged with the management of advocacy relations for high-profile healthcare accounts (encompassing both national and global work). Responsibilities include identifying, developing and cultivating positive and strategic relationships with key advocacy groups that impact target patient audiences. The VP will direct strategic and tactical implementation of advocacy programs and communications ensuring they are aligned with brand strategies and public relations objectives. He/She will provide strategic counsel to client, manage senior client relationships, budget and the advocacy relations team.

The individual will also have the opportunity to be integrally involved with new business pitches for the agency.

The ideal candidate will have a strong healthcare, Pharma and/or biotech advocacy background with 8 - 10 years of experience. Agency experience with client service mind-set and account team management background is a plus.
