Tuesday, May 29th, 2007The Genocide Intervention Network (GI-Net) is changing the way the United States and the international community respond to the world’s worst crime by building the first permanent constituency dedicated to ending genocide.
GI-Net empowers individuals and communities with the tools to prevent and stop genocide, to educate their communities, pressure their elected officials, and fundraise directly for civilian protection. Currently, the organization’s work is focused on ending the ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan; providing material support for African Union peacekeepers in the region and organizing political action campaigns for a more robust civilian protection force.
GI-Net operates a number of online campaigns, including our primary website, GenocideIntervention.net, our student-oriented website, STANDNow.org, and campaign websites such as DarfurScores.org, SudanDivestment.org and 1800Genocide.com.
The Genocide Intervention Network seeks an experienced professional to assist in the development and maintenance projects for GI-Net’s interactive website. These positions will provide invaluable experience and is ideal for college students or recent college grads seeking to be a critical part of a successful start-up non-profit organization.
This position is on-site in GI-Net’s Washington, D.C. headquarters.

Job Description:
The Information Technology and Web Development Associate for the Genocide Intervention Network will assist the Internet Strategy Coordinator and the Director of Communications in implementing technical and web-based projects for the organization. Specifically, job duties will include:
Assisting in the development of new websites and the redevelopment of current websites. This work may include programming, design, user interface and other aspects.
Along with the Internet Strategy Coordinator, Director of Communications, and the membership task force, helping to envision and implement new online tools to service members of the Genocide Intervention Network.
Along with the membership task force, helping to reach out to members through social networking services such as MySpace and Facebook.
Along with the membership task force, implementing “web 2.0″ projects involving members in the creation of content via YouTube, Flickr or similar web services.
Assisting in an overall information maintenance strategy involving customer relationship management (CRM), member and donor data, and organizational contacts.
Training other staff on new technologies as needed, and helping to support staff with technological expertise.
Working with third-party contractors on technical and web-based projects.
Being available to process data when necessary from one format to another, and assist in the gathering of statistics on metrics based on this data.
Making small updates to current websites and assisting other departments and campaigns with keeping their sections of the websites current.
Writing and maintaining documentation on the in-house wiki for technical and web-based tasks.
Among other software, GI-Net currently uses LAMP-based content management systems including Drupal, WordPress, MediaWiki and CiviCRM, as well as Salesforce. A significant amount of development work will take place with these programs.
Qualifications:
All employees of GI-Net must be committed, self-motivated professionals with the ability to work effectively independently and with a team. The IT and Web Development Associate must have excellent interpersonal skills and strong written and verbal communication skills Priority will be given to applicants who have a specific interest in preventing and stopping genocide.
As a member of the web development team, the IT and Web Development Associate will be expected to have a strong background in website development and design. Candidates should be thoroughly familiar with accessible, standards-compliant, semantic XHTML and CSS. Familiarity with PHP is recommended, and candidates with specific experience in Drupal will be given priority.
Additional skills that will increase a candidate’s application:
Experience in graphic design, especially in using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator for website development.
Experience building or maintaining online communities, especially those incorporating user-created content.
Experience writing or implementing online advocacy campaigns, including e-mail advocacy.
Experience with other nonprofits, community organizations or issue campaigns.
